Shamya McGee
Shamya McGee
Shamya grew up questioning Christianity, unsure if God was real, and convinced she didn't need Him. After growing up in a difficult home and eventually entering foster care, she found herself navigating life on her own, still searching for something she couldn't quite explain.
When she first started going to church, it was because of a relationship. But when that relationship ended, Shamya had a choice to make. Would she walk away from church, or would she keep seeking God for herself?
She chose to keep seeking.
As she began asking questions about faith, she reached out to a family friend who had consistently pointed her toward Jesus. Shamya remembers asking God to show her that He was real. The very next day, she was given a small Bible at her community college. It may have seemed like a small moment, but to Shamya, it was an answer to a prayer.
As she continued asking questions and searching Scripture, Heather eventually walked her through the meaning of salvation and prayed with her over the phone while Shamya was working in the back room at Walmart.
On March 1, 2023, Shamya gave her life to Jesus.
Since then, God has continued to transform her life. Her relationships, the music she listens to, the language she uses, and the people she surrounds herself with have all changed. She has experienced the freedom of forgiveness, grown through community, and found a place to belong.
When asked what she would tell someone who is interested in Jesus but afraid to take the next step, Shamya's encouragement was simple: get connected, ask questions, and look for answers in the Bible. She shared how Scripture helped her through seasons of doubt and strengthened her faith.
Shamya's story reminds us that God can meet us right in the middle of our questions. Sometimes, all it takes is someone willing to keep pointing us toward Him.
Someone invited us. We found a home. And God used His people to change our lives.
